In terms of health-related problems, time is an important factor. What this means is that it can sometimes take a lot of time for symptoms of these problems to become apparent. Of course, particularly in the case of childhood obesity, early years of the condition can set things in motion for problems later on. Still, a child’s youth can keep them from suffering from the sorts of medical problems that plague obese adults. But the condition in and of itself is definitely a risk factor for later on when adult sized conditions and problems develop. Some of the more serious possibilities are stroke, diabetes, high blood pressure, some types of cancer, liver disease and heart disease.
Obesity puts a lot of stress on all physical parts of the human body. If a child is overweight then this may cause them to have sleep apnea, which can be potentially dangerous. Normal breathing is also something that can be affected by being obese.
From being overweight a child or young adult can develop asthma. A different term used is exercise intolerance and it is when something challenges your normal breathing process. You may have noticed that overweight people often have labored breathing. This is a natural response because the body is having to work harder. This merely sets the stage for increased stress on the entire cardiovascular system, as well.
Just about any person who is obese suffers from a litany of psychological challenges. When it seems like all of the kids in your class abuse you every day, that will cause serious stress, anxiety, low self esteem, poor to zero self confidence and maybe even hatred toward self or others. All of these are silent problems that many obese kids and teens try to deal with all alone. If the situation is allowed to go on long enough the person dealing with it could even develop sociopathic behaviors. There is no real data about how many obese high school students who then go on to college. We are willing to bet that the number isn’t that big and that there are a lot more obese high school students than there are obese college students. Could you really blame them for choosing not to go when they probably imagine those years to be just as torturous as their high school years? This goes hand in hand with the bullying and general ostracizing the kids encounter at school, it is almost a guarantee that obese children and teens are pretty much guaranteed to develop social disorders. It is also called ‘social disability’ and goes hand in hand with depression, extreme feelings of unhappiness, etc. All of this will result in a crazy high stress level which, as you know, can lead to any number of problems both psychologically as well as physically. Curiously this means that some kids will become bullies themselves. What, obviously, is happening here is that the behavior is a sign of the anger that has more than likely accumulated from being bullied themselves.
Obviously, obese children are at tremendous physical and social disadvantages once they have reached their condition. Everybody knows just how difficult it can be to lose weight and to be successful at it you need to have strong support and high levels of determination. Parents and friends need to offer as much support as they can. Kids and young adults are resilient and have an easier time bouncing back once a healthy direction has been taken. Obviously, however that depends on what–if any–serious medical conditions have been made apparent.
